Opportunity Overview
AIChE's Chem-E-Car Competition® engages college students in designing and constructing a car powered by a chemical energy source, that will safely carry a specified load over a given distance and stop.
The competition, which involves multiple regional competitions and a final competition at the Annual Student conference, increases awareness of the chemical engineering discipline among the public, industry leaders, educators, and other students.
AIChE is looking for volunteers who can act as on site safety inspectors at the regional competitions, as well as volunteers who can help monitor the actual competition and ensure that safe chemical handling procedures are followed.
Expectations
On Site Safety Inspectors will attend the Safety Inspection at the Regional Chem-E-Car Competition location. Inspectors will divide into teams and will receive a Safety Review Form, which will prompt them questions to ask each Chem-E-Car Team about the potential safety hazards of their design.
- On Site Safety Inspectors are asked to provide comments and look for any potential safety rule violations. If the volunteers notice a potential hazard, they bring it to the attention of the Regional Lead Safety Coordinator, who will further investigate.
- The competition can also use volunteers to monitor the student teams during the competition and help enforce safe chemical handling practices (Watch for trip hazards, PPE usage, monitor hazardous waste, etc)
- The On Site Safety Inspection lasts about 2-3 hours
- The Regional Chem-E-Car Competition lasts about 3-4 hours
Requirements
- Volunteers should hold a degree in Chemical Engineering and/or have experience working in Process Safety
- Volunteers should be willing to travel to the competition locations. Unfortunately we do not have travel support available for this volunteer opportunity. This conference location does change year to year, so hopefully in a future year, the competition will be held at a University closer to you.
Competition Date and Location
The Mid Atlantic Regional Chem-E-Car Competition will take place the Friday March 24, 2017 - Saturday March 25, 2017 at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.
