Ian Sutton is a chemical engineer with over 30 years of design and operating experience in the process industries. He provides process safety and risk management services, both onshore and offshore, including audits, incident investigation, hazards analyses, operating procedures and management of change.
Mr. Sutton is the author of many professional books, ebooks, blogs, videos and numerous published articles and papers. Recent book titles are Process Risk and Reliability Management, Offshore Safety Management and Plant Design and Operations. He also developed the Operational Excellence Assessment system for evaluating the quality of safety management systems in the energy and process industries.
He provides consulting services to senior management on the implementation, effectiveness and cost of process safety and risk management programs. His client base includes companies in oil and gas production and refining, pipelines, chemicals, minerals processing, and food production.
Mr. Sutton's technical expertise includes the management and leadership of process hazards analysis, including HAZOP, What-If, Checklist and Fault Tree; the development of innovative, practical, efficient and proven techniques for writing and maintaining operating procedures; the application of multi-disciplinary engineering standards from organizations such as NFPA, ASME and API in the use of design and safety analysis work; and detailed knowledge of process safety regulations, including OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.119, Safety Cases, BSEE's SEMS and EPA’s RMP.
