    Bruce,

Glad you made this post even though my local section is down in the Freeport, TX, area.  One of the problems local sections have is finding speakers.  Your post makes me believe that the Institute might want to have a repository where speakers can post their location and topics.  Many years ago, I was the vice-chair of the Tulsa Section and was lucky to find good speakers. At that time, I had two speakers who were on a national list from the Institute and traveled to the various sections.  BUT, I feel that a repository with local speakers for local areas would be of great value.

There used to be a "speaker corner" where one could search by location and topic, not sure if it still exists on the AIChE website. It's mentioned on page 27 of this document:

I have made numerous presentations to the ChE students at MS&T some of which pertain to interesting process innovations, personal development, and why ChEs should consider PE registration.  I am willing to travel to other student chapters in our area to share what I can.  I could provide a list of topics to anyone who would request it.

You are correct. There was in the past a speakers corner that listed various speakers and topics.
The content was extremely difficult to keep current, as speakers changed content, contact information, etc and was seldom used by the local sections so we made the decision to remove it a few years ago.
The local sections committee does try to work with local leaders to share successful programming and recommend speakers and I am glad to use this platform to let them know of people who may have good talks or programming ideas.

I've given presentations at my local university AICHE (Colorado School of Mines) usually every year.  I talk for 2 minutes about my EPC / consulting company world.  Then I shift quickly to, basically, "You don't want to hear all that, but if you do, come see me afterwards...".  Then I usually discuss:

First--a technical pop quiz (I have a bunch on LinkedIn in my past articles, my favorites are Froude Number applications, or isentropic effects of gas at high velocities causing lower temperatures than expected.

Then I turn the focus on the students in these topics:
1). State of the union of industry locally and nationally--who's hiring and who's not.  Where to look for a job--mostly focused around oil/gas.
2). How EPC companies make their money and illustrate the need for % of billability hours.
3). What to expect when you're not expecting a job yet...and how engineering fields are still a heavily mentored field, and
4). What legal ramifications there are out there (PE licensure, state requirements, etc...)--from a high level only.  Encourage FE / PE licensure, and joining an organization like AICHE or GPSA locally.
5). General Q&A topics to help them with resume's, or other topics.

I usually pepper in things like "Experience trumps GPA", and "What not to do in an interview".

Two of the last 4 years, I got emails back from the AICHE leaders at Mines saying in their opinion, or by popular replies, it's the best topics they heard all year.

Students need and want to hear about THEIR situations, and how the industry impacts them.  That is the focus of most of my talk. It truly helps them.

I suggest this style of talk for a student chapter talk if you can swing it.
