Guidance On How To Improve Job Search During Difficult Time

  • 1.  Guidance On How To Improve Job Search During Difficult Time

    Posted 23 days ago
Hey everyone! My name is Amous and I'm currently a Chemical Engineering senior at Purdue University. Since the end of last year, I've constsntly attempted to secure a summer internship and was continuously unsuccessful, forcing me to take summer classes to ensure that the time wasn't wasted. The COVID-19 situation also caused my chances of getting an internship to decrease drastically. As of now, I'm looking at what I can possibly do to potentially improve my chances of finding a place to begin my chemical engineering career when I graduate next year in May. I have a particular interest in the petrochemicals industry along with process safety. How should I approach this predicament?

Hello Amous, how are you? I hope you're well and safe during these challenging times!

Firstly I'd say that there is no easy solution for this, nor a magical one. To be honest, I believe that focusing on the improvement of your curriculum, combined with networking, is the best option.

For your resume, as you said you're intereted in the process safety area, I recommend that you take the SAChE Course. For more information, you can read more clicking here.

For the improvement of your networking, I recommend that you create and fill in your LinkedIn profile appropriately. What I mean by appropriately is taking the time to write about you and the positions you've held in the past. Besides that, in addition to a suitable profile, it is very important that you interact in the network with people who have the same interests as you. So if you want to learn more about the petrochemical and process safety fields, follow experts from these areas. You can start searching by hashtags associated to these themes, as well as searching for the companies that you dream to work at.

Anyway, from what I can see and from what I follow in the networking area, the future of recruitment is through networking. Creating connectiond and maintaining them will be the answer for future professionals.

As I said, this is my opinion and piece of advice to you. Maybe someone will disagree with me or maybe even complement my answer. Also, don't hesitate to message or email me if you have any doubts, or even create a new post in the Student Central! I wish you all the best in your journey.

Hey Bruno! I'm doing as well as I can during this difficult time and hope that you are doing so too. I really appreciate your reply on this matter and I will certainly take the steps that you have suggested to further improve my job search chances. As for the SAChE certifications, I've already completed some of the courses and obtained the certificates for them. However, I am quite confused on how I am supposed to list all the certifications on my resume when I complete them, since there is only so much I can include in a single page.

When it comes to networking, I have sent several connection requests to those that are involved in the areas that I wish to specialize in and hopefully I will be able to get into contact with them and talk about what their day-to-day looks like.

Once again, I sincerely thank you for the reply and I hope we can connect with each other in the near future!
