    Can some one advise, what is the impact of having two phase crude flow in preheat exchangers located downstream of crude unit desalters

    Hello,
    1) For preheating of two phase crude oil we have to use High pressure steam for effective heat transfer, which increases the operating cost of process.
    2) You have to decrease the temperature of crude oil for that you need more cooling equipments due to high temperature.

    It is recommended to model your refinery on aspen hysys or unisim and put exactly the same condition you have on your plant & analyze what you are looking for.

    Dear Venkates,
    T he purpose of the preheater is to increase the temperature of the crude oil coming from storage tanks to the furnace feed design temperature around 280 Degree C , the tow phase impact will increase the energy consumption in the Heat Exchanger to meet the outlet design temperature which is the feed temperature to the furnace , on the other hand if the heater feed temperature was lower than the design , the DT across the heater will increase and more firing will take place in furnace radiant section the thing which will have an impact one furnace radiant section tube mechanical integrity due to( tube high skin temperature)
    In addition to that you might face an issue with burners firing which will lead to cook formation and end up with a deposits on the convection section tube and reduce it is heat transfer efficiency, on long run you might end up with replacing convection section tube .
    This is the worse case scenario of not controlling the HE outlet temperature due to tow phase .
    as conclusion the main impact:
    1- economic lose for the energy
    2- equipment mechanical integrity impact.
