Earlier this year, Dr. Matt Cooper and I launched a podcast on chemical engineering and education called "In The (Fume) Hood".  The focus of the podcast has primarily been on topics related to material and energy balances.  However, in this week's episode (#10) we wrestle with Covid-19 remote teaching challenges, such as synchronous vs. asynchronous lectures and options for tests, unit operations laboratories, group work and impacts on summer study abroad.  ITFH is available free on major podcast outlets including Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts, along with direct link to episodes at Soundcloud. ITFH is also on Twitter (@inthefumehood).

We're trying to make sense of the options available to our community, so give it a listen.  Also please share your thoughts and ideas about this challenge.  How are you handling online teaching?

    Jason,
Thank you for sharing this podcast! I really appreciate hearing how others are handling this situation. In particular, I'm interested to hear how the Unit Ops labs are being managed, because I think these are the most challenging to continue virtually. Anything with a lab component presents very unique challenges with online learning. I'm still trying to decide how to handle our last experiment of the semester, which will not happen now that we are "online only" through May. However, I'm grateful to hear the suggestions on your podcast and grateful for the work people have done on websites such as LearnChemE at Colorado.

    All the best,
    Stephanie

Thank you, Stephanie!  Unit Ops labs this summer are still a big question mark at this point.  We now know that neither of our study abroad programs will run in July, which may create a bottleneck down the road.  I suppose we could supply students with data and ask them to write reports, although the hands-on experience and trial-and-error aspects won't be there.  I assume that the IA State study abroad in Spain is also canceled?

We hope you and others continue to benefit from and enjoy the podcast.  The next few episodes were recorded several weeks ago, so they'll be back to material & energy balance topics.  I'm sure we'll do another episode about online teaching and the outcomes once we're nearing the end of this situation.

All the best to you too!

    Jason

    Jason,
Officially, we are in a "wait" mode for the Spain trip, to be re-evaluated on March 31. But I don't see it happening, since ISU has recalled all faculty, students, and staff who are abroad, and the State Department just issued a "Level 4: Do Not Travel" for the entire globe a few hours ago. I am hoping that we will be able to hold the course in the labs at ISU this summer, as a majority of my students need it to graduate in August and have jobs lined up already. I hate to think that they may have to stay an extra semester just to finish the Unit Ops labs...so perhaps an online version this summer will be the best we can do for this situation. It's far from ideal, but better than not graduating.

    Stephanie

    Hi!

AIChE Ed Divison is putting together Virtual Communities of practice. The idea is to group together faculty by courses and share ideas and promote discussion. There is one for Unit Ops. I look forward to hear about Process Design which is also hard to teach virtually.
