    Hello to all the members of AIChE community,

    I am wondering how as a faculty member we can be doing community engagement while discharging the day-to-day activities of a faculty member (teaching courses, doing research and serving many committees).

    Your help is appreciated.

    Professor,

    I read your posting, and an idea came to mind.

    It is quite obvious to me that you are very busy. If you and your peers could find the time to write a concise summary of your contributions at work on a quarterly basis, the summaries of you and your peers could be assembled, and then they could be sent to a targeted audience.

    The targeted audience that first comes to my mind is high school teachers that would share these summaries with their students. These summaries would help to bring the topics of science and math to life for the students.

    If you prefer to use technology, you and your faculty could create a podcast. The podcast could then be put online for students to watch in class.

    Any efforts to share your activities and contributions at work would be a tremendous public service. The opportunity for high school students, or even members of society, to learn about all that you and your peers are doing would increase awareness and perhaps even increase interest in science and math.

    Not to mention, having a real life.  

    Not sure what the answer is.  But I'm a big fan of advisor Brian Rose.  Here's a recent letters on this topic:



    Dear Readers,

    "Knowledge is power, learning is a superpower". That is the message of my recent guest Jim Kwik, the renowned expert in speed-reading, memory improvement, brain performance, and accelerated learning.

    After a childhood brain injury that left him learning-challenged, he overcame his struggles to learn by creating strategies to dramatically enhance his mental performance.

    Jim has since dedicated his life to helping others unleash their own brain-power, and serve as a coach to many of the world's leading CEOs and celebrities, including Elon Musk, Will Smith, and the cast of X Men.

    He has recently been living in Greece, the birthplace of ancient mnemonic training, work


    The Brain: Our Most Incredible Device

    It's easy to look at someone and see what they are made of, physically. However, it's important to remember that you can train your body and your mind. It's the same as someone who is training for a marathon; they will be able to climb a hill easier than someone who is not in shape. The mind works the same way; you can train your brain to allow you to learn faster. Jim Kwik is an advocate for both mental intelligence and mental fitness. He calls the current time, "the age of the mind."

    We live in a world where our devices rule our lives. It's so easy to be distracted or overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information that is out in the world. We can look up anything we want to know on our smartphones in seconds and it brings up the question, "Why do we need our memory?"

    Memory is a force multiplier, and Jim challenges any person to try to accomplish something without the use of memory. When we increase our capacity to learn, we become much more productive as humans 

    Jim believes that everyone has genius inside them and he wants to create an environment where that can be unleashed. The brain is the most incredible device we have been given, but it does not come with an instruction manual. Jim brings up the fact that school doesn't actually teach you how to learn. It teaches you what to learn, what to think and what to remember, but not HOW. Jim wants to fix that.

    The classroom doesn't have to be limited by four walls and I pride myself on the fact that London Reel is an example of a new way to learn. Through videos and podcasts so much information can be shared. New ideas are exchanged and people all over the world can have access to conversations with incredible achievers and thinkers such as Jim Kwik himself.


    Jim's Teaching Philosophy

    Jim works with all kinds of incredible people and companies from institutions like NYU and CalTech to huge corporations like Google. I was curious to know: what do they want Jim to teach them?

    Jim talked to me about the fact the we now face many digital challenges that other generations did not have to deal with; one of which is overload. Most of us deal with a lot of information in our jobs and are paid more for our "mind power" than anything else.

    Jim believes, "knowledge is not only power, it's profit." When you can "learn how to learn" you can apply that toward every aspect of your life from relationships to wellness to career. The greatest advantage in a world full of fast change is the ability to be able to absorb, assimilate, and apply new information. This is what Jim teaches them to do in the most efficient way possible.

    A lot of people complain about feeling burnt out or tired. Jim believes this is not because they are really doing too much; they are just not doing enough of what makes them feel alive. Jim is always stressing keeping the most important thing in your life the most important thing.

    At the end of everyone's life, opinions and fears won't matter. What will matter is how you lived, how you loved, and how you learned. When people can come from that place they will have a much better quality of life.

    Balance and harmony are also things that Jim teaches. He equates life to an orchestra where all the instruments come together and although they may not all be sounding equally, they all work together to create something beautiful.

    At the end of the day, the ultimate quest we are all on is to be able to realize and reveal our fullest potential. The companies that hire Jim want to do that too. In any given day, the majority of the time is either spent processing information or creating something. Jim goes into these companies to help them learn faster and to keep up with the data overload that everyone is struggling with.

    This struggle is even leading to health challenges such as, what is called, information fatigue syndrome, which can lead to high blood pressure and sleeplessness.

    The human ability to concentrate is reducing because of the constant use of devices.

    My talk with Jim allowed for a lot of thinking about what the upcoming generations are facing growing up in a "world of swiping." The world has changed so much and our education system has not kept up with it. We have to learn how to adapt our brains to learn more efficiently despite the constant overload of distractions. 

    Think about it; if you have your own company you know the importance of human capital. At most companies, half a day is being spent processing information. Think about what you could accomplish if you cut that time in half. 

    If you had two extra hours every day, what would you use that time for?
