Alternative Co-Ops and Internships for Students in COVID-19

As our students finish up a semester unlike any other - they are working (or not working) using the social distancing limitations and travel restrictions.  There are unique work experiences that they will have this summer and in the next few years.  As an educator - I wonder what can we tell our students in terms of options for them regarding  the diverse elements of the chemical engineering profession?  How do we prepare our future engineers and industry leaders?

A valuable type of summer professional development is studying with organized Web resources.
    • AIChE has the respected Safety and Chemical Engineering Education (SAChE) Certificate Program, where students can study and get certification.
    • MATLAB has lots of instructional videos built in, including its recent addition of analytics software. Want to use real-time camera data for a self-driving car or a lab robot? You could do it with these tools.
    • SAS is offering free online training and certification in analytics, too.
    • CodeAcademy is excellent for learning how to do serious, useful coding for free or cheap. For example, learning Python gives students a powerful tool for doing routine calculations and building additional tools like Jupyter notebooks.
    • Online learning provider Coursera has opened up its certificate programs to current undergraduate, graduate or recently graduated college and university students. Students with a verified school e-mail address can sign up for free access to more than 3,800 courses, 150 guided projects, 400 specializations and 11 professional certificates on the platform. Students must enroll before July 31, and you have until Sept. 30, 2020 to complete the programs.
