NASEM study on ChE in 21st Century – VLS questionnaire

Share your opinion on the future of chemical engineering.

The National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is conducting a study that will guide our profession for the next 30 years.  The Virtual Local Section is having two meetings on April 22 and 23 so rank-and-file AIChE members have an opportunity to provide input to the study.

Prior to the meeting, we are gathering information via a confidential questionnaire.  For further information about the study as well as the link to the questionnaire, visit the VLS meeting webpageIf you are interested in sharing your opinion, please take the VLS questionnaire.  (VLS members, please answer the questionnaire that was emailed to you directly from VLS.)

You may recall an earlier Discussion Central thread and an earlier 2019 Annual Meeting thread on the Town Hall at the 2019 Annual Meeting for the NASEM study on ChE in the 21st Century.  Feel free to look back at the threads we had on this back in November 2019.  Thanks to those of you who replied to the earlier threads ( @Kirsten Rosselot, @Alec Walker, @Phillip Westmoreland, and @Dan Lambert).

Looking forward to seeing everyone's opinions shared in the questionnaire.  And if you are interested in giving input beyond the questionnaire, please attend one of the upcoming VLS meetings.

I'm really looking forward to the interactive discussions about the future of chemical engineering that we'll be having at the Virtual Local Section's April online meeting next week.  I don't think there's ever been a meeting quite like this before.  @Aaron Sarafinas, are you going to make it so everyone can see the input that you send to NASEM?  Thanks a bunch for agreeing to facilitate this meeting -- it promises to be wild ride!  I hope everyone participates by either answering the questionnaire or attending a meeting or both.

We do plan to share the output from the meetings and questionnaire, @Kirsten Rosselot.  We are considering different options for where we post or share the results of the questionnaire and the output from the meetings.

Looking forward to an interesting couple of virtual meetings.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

When I took it, the survey made me stop to think.  I wonder if this type of survey has an outcome like fanciful futurist views that produced and brought about Tomorrow Land at Disney World for example, or is it more like a survey of people who estimate how many jelly beans are in a contest jar.  I hope it is more like the second rather than the first since the average of all guesses statistically tends toward the mean which as an encouragement shows that our careful thought together may give us  better insight into what we may expect than any one of us would find by careful thought by ourselves.  We are a chemical engineering community and I expect that we are stronger together in solving challenges and planning for an anticipated future than we are as lone rangers pursuing problems.

I am looking forward to the talk next week and encourage those of you who have not taken the survey to do so,  I would like to find out how many jelly beans are in our figurative contest jar of the future but need help from each of you so inclined to share time and complete the survey.

The questionnaire results will be a starting point for us to gather ideas in the meetings on what chemical engineers will be working on, how chemical engineers will be working, and where do we need training.  I'm looking forward to facilitating a lively virtual exchange of ideas on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thanks for your comment, Paul!  I like the jelly bean analogy.  :)

I Hope the meeting hours will be enough to discuss all about everything in that survey. With my limited level of experience, i found about 10 Megatrends in which chemical engineers will be greatly involved and needed for. Each one of those Megatrends will require a meticulous PDCA (PLAN-DO-CHECK-ACT) continuous improvement projects.

This is going to be very interesting and very broad. Except if the meeting is just going to be discussing the survey without any further continuous improvement plan, but i hope not.

now how do i register for the meeting?

    Thanks

There are two NASEM study meetings to choose from, @Najimdeen Adewuyi.   While we hope everyone did both, chemical engineers who did not fill out the questionnaire are welcome to attend a meeting.  I am writing this Sunday afternoon and the questionnaire will close tonight , so if anyone sees this in time, please answer the questionnaire whether or not you will be able to attend one of the meetings.

Here are the instructions for registering to attend a meeting:

    Two Meetings to Choose From:

Register in advance for the primary meeting (live interactive discussion, live chat at 9:00 PM EDT on Wednesday, Apr 22)

Register in advance for the alternate meeting (live interactive discussion, live chat at 1:00 PM EDT on Thursday, Apr 23)

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing instructions for joining the meeting, along with add-to-calendar links.

Looking forward to seeing you there, Najim.

The ideas that were generated for the NASEM future of chemical engineering study will be made available to anyone who wants to take a look.  So will @Aaron Sarafinas' slides with the poll results and the pre-meeting questionnaire results.   Not sure, but I think we are also going to make the recordings of last week's meetings available as well.  We will announce it on Discussion Central when we have the links.   The meetings were great, there were about a hundred energized attendees, and we got a lot of thoughtful input. Thanks so much for your question, @Christine Grant.

Let me clarify the objectives for the two meetings this week.  First, let me thank you for your questions, @Najimdeen Adewuyi.  And thanks to @Kirsten Rosselot for answering the question about the registration.

The meetings on Wed Apr 22 and Thu Apr 23 will be information sharing and data gathering exercises.  We will be providing NASEM with the results of the data gathering exercises for their use in their study.  We will use the results from the questionnaire to guide our discussions.  The discussions will focus on some of the highest ranking megatrends where chemical engineers can make an impact.  I will be looking for us to generate ideas on what chemical engineers will be working on differently within these megatrends, how chemical engineers will be working differently, and where should chemical engineers best get the training that will be needed to succeed.  Since we will have many people attending the meeting, we will be using virtual tools to gather the ideas and feed them back to the participants.  We plan to provide NASEM with the questionnaire results and the ideas generated at our meeting.  NASEM will take that input for use in their study.

For further details on the meeting, including links to the NASEM study webpage and registration links, please visit the VLS meeting website.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

Thanks for your interest in the meetings and for filling out the questionnaire, Teni. I will be facilitating both meetings.

I'm excited that 57 people have already registered for the Wednesday 9PM EDT meeting and so far 17 have registered for the Thursday 1PM EDT meeting.  Space is still available in both meetings.  I've started looking through the questionnaire results and I'm looking forward to an interesting couple of meetings.

    Thanks,
    Aaron
