artificial intelligence and chemical engineers

Artificial intelligence strikes fear into the heart of some folks, but how do chemical engineers see it?  I just did a quick search of journal articles related to chemical engineering and artificial intelligence in 2020 (so only half a year) and there are a slew of papers centered around solving bread-and-butter chemical engineering problems via the use of artificial intelligence:
    • process development
    • improving performance of existing processes
    • modeling friction factors in large piping networks
    • modeling the behavior of chemicals in the environment
    • improving separations
    • understanding physical properties
    • designing catalysts
    • modeling mass transfer
Does anybody have a real-life example of artificial intelligence being used at their facility?

Excellent question about real-life examples of AI being used in facilities, Kirsten.   Here are some thoughts on a couple of resources.

First, there was an interesting Perspective article in AIChE Journal in Feb 2019 by Venkat Venkatasubramanian where he discussed the history of AI in Chemical Engineering with some examples, recent trends, and future outlooks.  The article is open access at:  https://aiche.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/aic.16489.

Second, on Wednesday June 24 and Thursday June 25 the AIChE Virtual Local Section (VLS) will be having a presentation and interactive dialogue on "The Next Digital Leap to AI."  After a short presentation by Dr. Sam Samdani from McKinsey, attendees at the Wednesday night meeting will give input to guide the interactive dialogue with Dr. Samdani.  Attendee input about artificial intelligence and what it means for chemical engineers will be captured at all three VLS meetings.  For more information, go to https://www.aiche.org/community/sites/local-sections/virtual-local-section/events/next-digital-leap-ai-interactive-webinar.

If people have real-life examples of AI in their facilities, I hope they share them at one of the VLS meetings and here in this Discussion Central thread.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

Hi.  We have an active organization in BP dedicated to digital technology implement in our refineries.  This includes "cognitive" AI by our partner Beyond Limits.

Your contributions to the discussion at one of the Virtual Local Section meetings  this week that Aaron mentioned would be great, Marty.  I hope you can make it.  Registration is required, but these meetings are free and all are welcome.

    Dear all,

I think this is an interesting topic. Well, I use artificial intelligence to solve ODEs and use this to predict the anaerobic digestion process. I think this is just a start.

The primary or alternate 1 time slots for the Virtual Local Section meetings this month might work for you, @Zhu Ming.  I hope you can make it to one of them!

As an implementation partner for several technology providers, we have implemented ML-based Asset Performance Monitoring solutions for multiple industries, including, Oil and Gas, Alumina, Power, Petrochemical, etc. Some of the projects included the deployment of several non-invasive wireless sensors to complement the existing  DCS tags, while many other projects only relied solely on existing DCS tags. This was followed by data aggregation on the premise, transmission of selected data to cloud for AI engine to analyze the streaming data for asset health monitoring, in real-time. The model also issues appropriate alerts to site management. Over the years, we have accumulated several instances where the alerts issued for different pieces of equipment caught the malfunctioning equipment in time, leading to better safety, operations, and savings.
