A recently released on-line PE Review Course is now available on AIChE Academy.

Here is the link to the Academy offering for further information and to purchase this course:

    https://www.aiche.org/academy/courses/ela260/chemical-pe-exam-review-course

This is a great member benefit for all of you who would like to prepare to take the PE exam in order to become licensed.

Your Licensure and Professional Development Committee (LPDC) worked for some time to make this available. We hope you will find it of great value.

    Dear Anthony,

I would like to know if you can help me with the next question. Are you aware of any available version of a chem PE exam with solutions? I guess this can promote more members to try to do it. Also quite useful for last year undergraduate students.

    Best regards,
    Antonio

    Dr. Dominguez-Ramos,

The NCEES, who administers the PE exam offers practice exams (with solutions) (https://account.ncees.org/exam-prep/366) for purchase ($39.95 US). You may download a free preview of the practice exam being offered. The overall site (https://ncees.org/)  has a wealth of information regarding licensure.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.

    Anthony

Is there a plan to make this a regular event or is this a one off?

    Matthew,

As Joe Cramer stated - this should be available via AIChE Academy for the foreseeable future.

Also, once you purchase the content - it never expires. You may take it as many times as you wish!

It would also be good for those who already have their Chem PE as a way to "refresh" them selves on the topics!

    Be Safe.

Given the cost, many will have to impoverish themselves to take advantage. Not all chemical engineers are members of the 1%.

Yes, Steven, it does cost a little money ($620 for members) but considering the expenditure over the remaining career length of most course candidates it's a fairly small commitment. I would be willing to bet that anyone who conscientiously commits to taking this course will in all probability pass the PE Principles exam on their first try ( I work on the Ch.E. PE Exam Committee so I can attest to the fact that great efforts are made to be sure that the exams are fair and not tricky).  The cost of taking the PE Exam is I think $375 so I don't think  anyone wants to take it more than once. The overall pass rate is in the low 70% range (for all takers). I don't have many statistics for how much taking  a good prep course helps improve one's chances but my bet is that it can help significantly depending on how rusty one may be in certain areas (I did see some statistics online for Civil Engineering prep courses that indicate increases in pass rate of ~20% so I wouldn't be surprised if those who take this Ch.E. course experience 90+% pass rates. But understand there are no guarantees and one has to work at a prep course to benefit).  Of course, one can do the required studying quite independently but for many of us this may require a substantial amount of self discipline and more hours of study and preparation.

When I stood for the FE Exam many years ago I took my company refresher course (I worked for a large engineering firm at the time). I was fortunate that I had this free course available. I passed on my first try and doubt that I would have without the course. If I had not had access to the company free refresher course I am fairly certain I would have looked to a paid prep course because I was really rusty in many areas as it was well over 10 years since I had received my BS.

Anyway, it is everybody's personal decision but I think that there are many reasons to obtain a PE and that the financial investment is modest compared to the time and work study commitments required.

    Good Luck.
