Proper sizing of suction strainer

    Good day,

I am working on selecting a suitable suction strainer for a pump (crude oil / slops service which takes suction from a sump-base sediment and particles present). Can any insight as to possible types of strainers to be used? I am aware that the following is required for sizing the strainer:
    1. flow rate, viscosity of fluid
    2. NPSHa of pump to gauge the allowable pressure drop
    3. mesh size (centrifugal pumps can tolerate 1/4" particles)
    4. I am proposing a basket strainer with a spare, which will have a differential pressure gauge

What are typical type / model / brand of strainers used in this service?

Many companies make the type of strainer you are looking for, and there are many variations of the design, materials, etc.  One company I've used in the past is Stayflow, check the selections on the links below.  Best to work with the company's sales person or a representative to get exactly what you need.  Good luck!

I would recommend you install a double strainer that can be cleaned without shutting down the process.
